We are looking to hire:

Intern, International Shipping Department, Hamburg

Berenberg’s involvement in shipping dates back to the 18th century. Over time, we have established business relationships with more than 400 international shipping clients and have successfully launched several private debt funds backed by institutional long-term capital.

As part of the International Shipping Department within Corporate Banking, our Interns get the opportunity to experience first hand the inner workings of a department focused on international maritime banking services, maritime finance and investment management.

The interns, within their stay of at least three months, will rotate through the following functions:

  • Relationship and Account Management: Dive into Transaction and Cash Management Services, the core of our department and the largest part of your rotation. You will gain in-depth knowledge of managing client relationships and accounts, learning how to tailor banking solutions to meet the unique needs of our international shipping clients.
  • Foreign Exchange Trading: Complementing your experience from our Relationship and Account Management team, you will have the opportunity to spend a few days with our FX traders. Here, you'll observe how they work with shipping clients daily to execute large transactions or acquire complex financial instruments.
  • Ship Finance and Asset Management: Explore the world of ship finance and asset management. You'll learn how we structure financing solutions for maritime assets, assess and document credit risk and manage our loan portfolio. These functions offer a blend of analysis and industry-specific knowledge.
  • Shipping Origination: Join our specialized and dedicated deal team for a few days. You will be involved in the origination of new shipping deals, from initial client engagement to the finalization of complex transactions.

We are looking for a reliable team player with a natural curiosity and a strong desire to learn and develop. In this role, you will participate in all tasks of a maritime bank and support the team with various responsibilities. The ideal intern is ambitious, proactive, detail-oriented, and possesses excellent analytical and communication skills. You should be eager to take on new challenges and demonstrate a passion for the maritime and financial industries. A willingness to adapt to a dynamic work environment and collaborate with colleagues and clients from diverse backgrounds is essential. If you are driven by a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement, we encourage you to apply and join our team.

Your profile:

  • Currently pursuing your bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business administration or shipping
  • Reliable team player with a natural curiosity and strong desire to learn and develop
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Eager to take on new challenges and demonstrate a passion for the maritime and financial industries
  • Ability to work independently on defined tasks, while seeking advice where appropriate
  • Open-minded and passionate about problem solving, while being used to working in a fast-paced environment
  • High standard of oral and written English is essential; proficiency in German is a plus, but not a must

What we offer you:

  • Varied and exciting area of responsibility in a modern and dynamic environment as well as an appreciative working atmosphere
  • Structured and smooth onboarding process
  • Additional benefits such as company sports programmes and access to an external benefits portal with exclusive offers
  • Lots of other extras such as for e.g. contribution to public transport use and lunch vouchers
