Senior Developer / System Engineer (Investment Banking Technology - Middle Office), 

Global Technology @ Berenberg

Our Technology department of around 300 employees works in an agile way and covers areas such as Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Operations, Process and Governance, Software Development and Architecture. We are particularly proud to develop almost all of our applications in-house, which gives us unique flexibility and innovative strength. The development teams appreciate the opportunity to be fully responsible for their applications requiring a comprehensive understanding of the architecture and functionality. This means the design and development, full automation, build and deployment up to monitoring and support of the running application.  

Our tech stack includes modern technologies such as Java, Kotlin, TypeScript and Python, CI/CD pipelines, microservices, Kubernetes as well as Azure Cloud, Azure SQL Database and Oracle Database with PL/SQL

Your Role in the team 

The Investment Banking Middle Office Technology team is a software development team working within the Investment Banking Technology division. The key team responsibility is to enable the IB Middle Office business department to efficiently manage trades with institutional counterparties. Supported processes includee: trade data enrichment, FX-trading, allocation, confirmation, commission management, (regulatory-) reporting. 

To cater for the changing nature of the investment banking business and to enable our business growth, we are taking our Middle Office Systems to the next level by redesigning it as a greenfield project and thereby migrating it to appropriate technologies. 

What will you do?

  • Driving design discussions/decisions for the new Middle Office System 
  • Inspiring the team in building adaptable, dependable and scalable applications 
  • Implementation, full automation, production deployments and monitoring. The individual will get the opportunity to be involved in every phase of our software development process  
  • Creating and developing user stories with the team in a close relationship to the business department  
  • Contributing to the team’s agile practices, including daily stand-ups and retrospectives 

Who we are looking for? 

  • A proactive mindset with excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative  approach  
  • 5 years core Java programming experience (or more)
  • Experience with microservice architectures e.g Docker, SpringBoot, Helm, Kubernetes 
  • Exposure to GUI technologies (HTML5, React and Java-/TypeScript) 
  • Experience in full SDLC using build tools (Git, Maven, Bamboo) 
  • Expertise in modern software design, architecture patterns, and performance measurement (throughput, latency, capacity) 
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills 
  • Ability to openly propose and defend technical solutions 
  • Experience with relational databases  

Desirable: 

  • Experience with Linux operating systems and Bash scripting 
  • Experience with GUI technologies 
  • Experience with building software to support Middle Office workflows like allocation, trade data enrichment and confirmation 
  • Experience with a relational database, ideally exposure to Oracle PL/SQL
