Susette, Head of Private Market Solutions, has been with Berenberg since 2003. She told us what she particularly likes about her job and Berenberg, and gave us valuable insights into her more than two decades of experience at the bank.
What do you love about your job?
I deal with investment opportunities for our wealth management clients in private markets, particularly in relation to private equity. These are investments in companies that are not traded on a stock exchange. The work involves a variety of different challenges. These markets are nowhere near as standardised as the stock exchanges, which makes the work particularly exciting, as every day brings new and unique situations. I can draw on all the knowledge from my time in the liquid equity markets, utilise a wealth of experience in process design and administration and develop solutions for an increasingly important asset class for our clients.
What is it that you love about working for Berenberg?
For me, entrepreneurial thinking is not just an empty phrase. I have always had the opportunity to really live out my creative freedom and create value for our customers and the company.
What skills, characteristics or behaviours do you possess that have helped you thrive in your role?
I think that my ability to learn, my discipline and my own will to perform have paved the way to my current position. I am truly passionate about private equity. This enthusiasm enables me to familiarise myself deeply with the subject matter and to learn continuously. It is a kind of logical progression after many years working with listed companies. My passion for private equity drives me to always look for the best solutions for our clients and to develop innovative approaches that meet their individual needs.
What has been your best experience at Berenberg?
One of my most valuable experiences was the opportunity to develop within the organisation and move to a new position after feeling that my role in the investment bank had reached its limits. This change allowed me to gain new knowledge and develop myself further, which has enriched me personally and professionally.
What surprised you the most about Berenberg once you started working here?
When I started, we opened our first office in London. I was impressed by the speed of growth and the consistent realisation of this path by the partners. It is also an expression of the enormous agility within the organisation, which is often not perceived as such by the outside world.
What has Berenberg done to invest in your professional or personal development?
I have been supported in various further training courses and have the opportunity to attend events that not only serve to build networks, but also help me to continuously improve my expertise. And when change happened too quickly, I was able to take advantage of personal coaching.
Has Berenberg supported you in a particularly special way throughout your time here?
At times when my private life required a little more attention, I was always given the necessary flexibility in terms of working hours.
