With our dual study programmes in Hamburg, you have the choice between two attractive educational paths that offer you excellent preparation for your professional future.
Our three-year dual study programme in cooperation with the Hamburg School of Business Administration (HSBA) enables you to study business administration while gaining valuable practical experience in various areas of the bank. Alternatively, we offer you a four-year integrated study programme in which you complete a degree in business administration at the Beruflichen Hochschule Hamburg (BHH) and at the same time undergo an Apprenticeship as a bank clerk. Here you will gain extensive practical experience in various positions within the bank, which will help you to put your theoretical knowledge directly into practice.
Both paths offer you the ideal combination of theory and practical training to best prepare you for your career.
Dual study programme at HSBA
Our dual study programme enables you to study for a bachelor’s degree, while gaining practical experience of working at a major European bank. You build your knowledge and skills working in a variety of different business teams and contributing to live projects. This gives you an excellent opportunity to experience different parts of our business and identify the area where you want to build your career at Berenberg.
It also enables you to build a valuable network of contacts across our business, as you will be working with, and learning from, people at all levels. Naturally, as well as financial support with your degree, we will also give you all the personal support you need to be successful. At the end of your programme, we will aim to offer you a permanent role in the bank. We will also continue to ensure you have opportunities to further develop your technical and personal skills.
Integrated study programme at BHH
As part of our integrated study programme, you will acquire a bachelor’s degree and your Apprenticeship as a bank clerk at the same time. This allows you to gain practical experience working in a major European bank.
You will expand your knowledge and skills by working in various teams and participating in current projects. This will give you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with different areas of our business and find out where you would like to continue your career at Berenberg after graduation. It will also allow you to make useful contacts across the organisation as you will work with and learn from colleagues at all levels. In addition to financial support for your studies, you will of course also receive the personal support you need to succeed.
Our aim is to be able to offer you a permanent position at the bank at the end of the programme. We will also ensure that you have opportunities to develop your professional and social skills after joining our company.
Differences between the programmes
Our integrated study programme differs from a traditional dual study programme in that it focuses even more strongly on professional practice and optimally dovetails this with an accompanying course of study. In contrast to the dual study programme, which often focuses on academic training and is supplemented by practical phases, this programme initially concentrates on comprehensive vocational training. This is supplemented by specific academic units so that the processes are harmonised over the four years.
While you switch regularly between study and practice in the dual study programme, you will experience a clearly structured change in the integrated study programme. You benefit from three learning locations: the vocational school, the university and, of course, directly at Berenberg - all organised in blocks that allow you to concentrate intensively on each area. What is particularly noteworthy is that at the end of the four years you will not only have a university degree, but also a recognised professional qualification in your pocket. This gives you a double advantage: you will have the best theoretical training and be fully operational in practice.

There’s a great sense of community here. All the staff and managers are all really helpful, and it’s great that there are some after work meetings und lunches where you can meet all other students and interns. The thing that made me take the step and join Berenberg was how balanced the programme is. I spent three months in the University acquiring theoretical knowledge, then another three months taking on a variety of assignments in different departments of the bank. My focus is on Banking Operations, so I get experience in any department related to that. It allows me to have an especially broad view of the bank, which will help me a lot in the future.

How long are the programmes?
The programme in cooperation with the HSBA (Hamburg School of Business Administration) lasts three years. The integrated study programme in cooperation with the BHH (Berufliche Hochschule Hamburg) lasts four years. Both programmes includes an induction time and several rotational placements across the business.
