Our teams

Client Services

Client Services

In Client Services, we manage the entire client journey from opening a bank account, to operating payments and evaluating credit risks. Working closely with other Berenberg teams, we set up client accounts quickly, and are renowned for managing and enacting all bank-wide payments efficiently across Europe and the wider world. We also assess and evaluate each client’s financial situation before and during the lifetime of any credit transaction, and these credit decisions enable clients to move forward with their private, professional and corporate investment transactions.

Compliance

Compliance

Berenberg operates in a continuously changing regulatory landscape. In Compliance, we ensure the bank complies with all the relevant laws and rules to protect both our reputation and our people. This involves providing extensive knowledge and expertise to a variety of teams across Berenberg, enabling them to continue their business activities. We have specialist teams focusing on issues such as Anti-Financial Crime, Monitoring, Conflicts of Interest, Systems and Controls. Working closely with the bank’s stakeholders, we ensure they understand and implement relevant regulations and help to create a culture that enables Berenberg to thrive within the regulatory landscape.

Human Resources

Human Resources

In HR, we act as a business partner to the bank’s business units, helping them to develop our people, organisation and structures. We enable the bank to thrive by managing every aspect of careers at Berenberg. This includes recruitment, learning and development, ensuring a pipeline of talent by managing early careers programmes, compensation and benefits, policies, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and health management. We also act as a point of contact for all employees throughout their time with Berenberg. In Germany, this includes working closely with the works council.

Internal Audit

Internal Audit

Berenberg operates in a constantly changing international banking environment, which could expose the business to new potential risks. In Internal Audit, we act on behalf of the Executive Board to independently audit the bank’s approach to risk management. Our aim is to identify any potential new risks, initiate measures to reduce them and report on the state of the bank’s business processes. This involves analysing processes and regulations and keeping up to date with new, sometimes complex issues to ensure the bank manages risk effectively.

Legal

Legal

Our legal teams provide legal advice and guidance at every level across the bank. As well as handling legal disputes and managing litigation involving the bank, we draft and review contracts, agreements and policies to ensure they are both legally sound and aligned to the bank’s objectives. We also liaise with regulators and external counsel to ensure the bank’s business decisions are compliant and legal. By ensuring legal compliance, minimising legal risks and promoting a culture of integrity and trust, we play a key role in the bank’s long-term success.

Risk Controlling

Risk Controlling

As part of the central bank steering mechanism, in Risk Controlling we limit risk and providing vital financial information that supports senior managers in their business activities. We are responsible for managing market, credit and operational risks, including regulatory reporting, financial control, accounting and profit and loss. This is complex and interesting work, involving a variety of disciplines, from quantitative financial modelling to regulatory analysis and finance-related issues such as accounting and financial control.

Tax

Tax

We are responsible for tax across the entire Berenberg Group. This is a varied role, covering everything from US income tax to UK sales tax or branch taxes in different European countries, as well as all local and international taxes relating to our clients’ investments. With these responsibilities, we have two main roles. As the gatekeepers for global tax compliance, we ensure Berenberg and its customers comply with all relevant rules and regulations. At the same time, we act as consultants, offering expert advice to ensure the bank delivers economically effective solutions to customers.

Transaction Services

Transaction Services

In Transaction Services, we manage the entire value chain for the accounting, control and settlement of Berenberg’s securities and foreign exchange transactions. We work closely with other bank departments to provide them with high quality, professional and efficient transaction solutions, based on innovation and reliability. By standardising and optimising processes and introducing workflow technology, we aim to make transaction processes more efficient and secure.
